It is very old design (since 1981 from what I have read). My car is 94 and has the 4 speed vacuum operated transmission which does not have any electronic control as far as I know.

The PDF is good but all the other info does not apply for me. The lights do come on though.Īnd the fuse is the correct one (15A) and is not burning. I pulled out the fuse for the back up lights (number 29 - 15Amp) and guess what - the car does not die in reverse any more! i also tried with the car running and in reverse and with the fuse removed and brakes on - I go and put the fuse back in and car dies immediatley. I work too much during the week so I only had 10 minutes to play with it today and found the following: IF it goes in R and I manage to keep it running and then put it back to P,N,D,2,3 It will die or idle at 200RPM !?!Ĭlick to expand.I have not checked the link you provided yet but I have some success with the troubleshooting. SO IF the lever never goes in R the car will idle fine and can be shifted to D,2,3 and no problem. Same thing if I shifted from R to P or D or 2 or 3. I put in N start it again and again my left foot on brakes right foot give a little throttle put in R it engages, NOW HERE IS THE STRANGE PART - I shift back to N, release the throttle and it either dies or idles at 200-300 RPM! I shift to R (left foot on the brakes, right foot giving little throttle) - reverse engages and car wants to get going. I shift to D - it idles fine and will drive fine. I shift it in N and start it - it idles fine. Where is that relay for the reverse light maybe i should try unpluging it? So I am thinking moving the shifter trough R so fast want cause it to engage at all so the engine is not dieing because of load. In the 20 000 + miles I have had the car when I put in reverse it has always taken like a 1-2 seconds to engage - not right away and usually I could hear a sound as if something is sucking vacuum and right after that it engages. Even though I shift very fast trough reverse. I was thinking it is something electrical because If I start the car in P and then shift very fast to D ( I have to go trough R) the car dies.

The idle speed is fine too - just as it was before. It does shift and drive normal when in D. The car ONLY dies in Reverse, it will not die in 2,3,D, N or P. The oil level in the transmission is normal. Click to expand.I was in a hurry today and did not post all the details:
